Harker Heights — The Top Pick for Families
Consistently the most popular choice for military families, and for good reason. Harker Heights ISD is the standout school district in the area. The neighborhood itself is suburban, well-maintained, and has a large military family community — which means your family will settle in quickly. Clear Creek Gate makes it about a 15-minute commute to most parts of post.
Sujin’s take
If schools are your top priority and you’re above E-5, Harker Heights is almost always the right call. The BAH math works: rent runs $1,200–$1,500 for a nice 3BR, and most of my military clients still pocket $200+ monthly.
Nolanville — Best Value in the Harker Heights Zone
Nolanville sits just south of Harker Heights and offers a quieter, smaller-town feel at lower prices. School quality is solid — it straddles the Harker Heights/Killeen ISD boundary, so check which district your specific address falls in. Popular with families who want proximity to Harker Heights amenities without the Harker Heights price tag.
Killeen — Most Inventory, Widest Range
Killeen is where you’ll find the largest selection of homes and the widest price range. The city has a mixed reputation, but that reputation is heavily zip-code-dependent. Areas west of I-14 near post are generally solid. East of I-14 is where you’ll want to do more research before committing. Killeen ISD quality varies significantly by campus — if you have school-age children, confirm which school your address is zoned for before signing a lease.
Heads up
Avoid east Killeen and areas directly outside the main gate on Fort Hood Street if schools or neighborhood feel are priorities. Use Google Street View and GreatSchools.org to vet specific streets before touring.
Copperas Cove — For the West Gate Commuter
Copperas Cove ISD is a solid school district, and the cost of living is the most affordable in the area. The trade-off is commute — if your unit is on the east side of post, you’re adding time to your drive. Best for families assigned near the West Fort Hood Gate, or budget-conscious buyers looking to maximize purchasing power.
Temple / Belton / Salado — For the School-Priority Buyer
If you’re buying and schools are the priority, the Temple–Belton–Salado corridor is worth the 35–45 minute commute. These ISDs consistently rank among the top in Central Texas. With VA loan purchasing power, families who buy here often secure significantly nicer homes for the same monthly payment they’d spend renting closer to post.
