Harker Heights and Killeen aren’t separate school districts — they’re both zoned into Killeen ISD, and clearing up that mix-up is usually step one for any PCS family I work with. The real question isn’t “which district,” it’s “which zone,” and that’s where the actual differences show up.
With $100M+ in career sales guiding military families through exactly this decision, here’s what matters before you start touring.
One District, Different Zones
Killeen ISD is a large district — 53 schools serving roughly 45,000 students across western Bell County. That scale is a double-edged sword: it means resources and program variety, but it also means school quality varies noticeably by attendance zone, even within the same district.
The Texas Education Agency’s 2024–2025 accountability ratings show why zone matters more than district name here. Killeen ISD’s overall district rating is a C. But Harker Heights High School — one of six high schools in the district — earned a B, as did Harker Heights Elementary. Individual campus performance inside Killeen ISD can run well above or below the district average, which is exactly why “just check the district rating” isn’t good enough advice for a PCS family choosing a neighborhood.
Harker Heights-Zoned Schools
Homes in Harker Heights typically feed into a cluster of Killeen ISD campuses built or renovated specifically to serve the growing Harker Heights side of the district, including Harker Heights High School, Harker Heights Elementary, and Union Grove Middle School (located right in Harker Heights on E Iowa Drive). Families relocating here tend to like the newer subdivisions, master-planned neighborhoods, and the shorter commute to the Clear Creek/FM 2410 side of the base.
Skipcha Elementary is another campus that comes up constantly in this conversation — it’s the one I get tagged in on Instagram the most, and for good reason: it’s a well-regarded zoned elementary for several of the newer Harker Heights neighborhoods.
Killeen-Proper Zoned Schools
Homes zoned to Killeen-proper campuses — including schools like Killeen High School and the elementary and middle schools closer to downtown and North Killeen — tend to come with a wider range of home ages and price points, often making them a better fit for buyers prioritizing affordability or a shorter commute to specific gates.
Individual Killeen-zoned campuses vary in accountability ratings just as Harker Heights ones do — some perform above the district average, some below — so “Killeen schools” as a blanket label doesn’t tell the whole story any more than “Harker Heights schools” does. This is exactly why I always pull the specific zoned campus for an address before a client makes an offer, rather than relying on the city name on the listing.
What This Means for Your PCS Timeline
A few things I tell every military family before they start touring:
Zone follows address, not city. Two homes ten minutes apart can feed into completely different elementary schools. Always verify the zoned campus for a specific address — don’t assume based on the mailing city.
Ratings shift year to year. TEA accountability ratings are recalculated annually. A campus’s B or C today reflects the 2024–2025 school year; it’s worth a quick re-check closer to your move date, especially if you’re PCSing more than a few months out.
Kids in the middle of a program (dual-language, AP, JROTC, athletics) may weigh zone more heavily than parents realize. If your student is mid-sequence in a specific program, ask me to check whether the target zone’s campus offers a continuation before you fall in love with a house.
On-post housing has its own zoning rules. Families in on-post Fort Cavazos housing are zoned into Killeen ISD as well, but through a separate boundary map than off-post neighborhoods — worth confirming with the housing office if on-post is part of your plan.
The Bottom Line
Harker Heights vs. Killeen isn’t a “which district is better” question — it’s a “which zoned campus fits your family” question, and the answer depends on the specific address, not the city name on the sign. That’s a distinction a lot of national relocation sites gloss over, and it’s exactly the kind of local, campus-level detail I walk every PCS family through before we start touring homes.
If you’re weighing Harker Heights against Killeen for your own move, let’s talk through your specific zone options — schedule a consultation and I’ll pull the exact campuses for any address you’re considering.
